New Street Fighter Movie Incoming: Will Andrew Koji & Noah Centineo Be Ryu & Ken?
Video game aficionados, get ready! Legendary Pictures is currently developing a brand-new live-action movie based on Capcom's iconic fighting game, Street Fighter. Steering this highly anticipated project is the talented Kitao Sakura, an emerging filmmaker recognized for his work on the critically acclaimed "Bad Trip" (2021) and episodes of the "Twisted Metal" series (2023).
Excitement is mounting regarding the casting of the new Street Fighter film, with buzz surrounding potential actors for the legendary fighters Ryu and Ken. Reportedly in talks to portray Ryu is Andrew Koji, well-known for his roles in the action-packed series "Warrior" and the recent film "Snake Eyes." Joining him in consideration for the role of Ken is Noah Centineo, famous for his appearances in "To All the Boys I've Loved Before" and the spy thriller series "The Recruit." While these are the leading contenders, further casting announcements are eagerly awaited.
The journey of Street Fighter in live-action cinema is a captivating and often debated one. It all began in 1994 with the Steven E. de Souza-directed film starring Jean-Claude Van Damme. Despite mixed reviews from critics and game purists, this initial adaptation proved to be a box office success and remains one of Van Damme's highest-grossing movies.
In 2003, a potential sequel to Street Fighter was in development, with Van Damme slated to return as Guile, alongside Damian Chapa as Ken and Byron Mann as Ryu. Even names like Dolph Lundgren and Holly Valance (reportedly replacing Kylie Minogue as Cammy) were mentioned. Sadly, this follow-up never materialized.
Fans had to wait until 2009 for another foray into the Street Fighter universe with "Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li." Directed by Andrzej Bartkowiak, this film featured a cast including Kristin Kreuk, Chris Klein, Robin Shou, Michael Clarke Duncan, and the legendary Hong Kong actress Cheng Pei-pei.
A different approach was attempted in 2014 with "Street Fighter: Assassin's Fist," a web series starring Mike Moh and Christian Howard. The success of this production led to its re-release as a television series and feature film, and it spawned a sequel in 2015 titled "Street Fighter: Resurrection," which introduced Alain Moussi.
The new Street Fighter movie, helmed by Kitao Sakura and potentially starring Andrew Koji as Ryu and Noah Centineo as Ken, is generating significant anticipation among fans of Capcom's Street Fighter video game and enthusiasts of action cinema. We will be keeping a close eye on upcoming news regarding the full cast and the potential release date of this promising adaptation from Legendary Pictures. The legacy of Street Fighter films continues, and we sincerely hope this latest installment successfully captures the essence of the classic fighting game.
